It’s a fact: People take risks buying homes overseas. Don’t you be one of them! If you are buying abroad: do it properly.

TV programmes with titles like: Holiday Homes From Hell and Housetrapped In The Sun, programme makers are looking for trouble. Trevor Macdonald's Tonight programme came in for criticism from Bernadette Costello, editor of Overseas Property Professional magazine who found both those appearing on the programme and those who found themselves on the cutting-room floor all had positive contributions edited out. Costello spoke to someone attending a property auction filmed in the programme that sold only one home under the hammer. They claimed the auction was held at such short notice, the auctioneer had to phone friends to sit in the room! Costello suggested: “Perhaps Spain should change its name because headline writers are rhyming Spain with too many words like ‘pain’, ‘no gain’, ‘strain’ and ‘shame’.”

It's interesting to note that the Met Office issued guidelines ordering forecasters to put a more positive spin on the UK weather, so whenever there’s a ‘small chances of showers’, forecasters might now say it’s going to be ‘mostly dry’. If you’re thinking about joining the estimated six million buying a home abroad, let us give you our version of ‘dry’... It's in the shape of a lovely wide-necked glass, filled with dark red Rioja; supped on a sunny balcony cascading with bougainvillea!
